"Looking after a vinyl front end
A turntable rewards maintenance more than any other component in a system. Alignment, tracking force, cleanliness and stylus condition all change what you hear, and all of them drift over time.
Cartridges are the biggest single upgrade available to a deck, but they have to suit the arm. Compliance and effective mass have to work together, and a cartridge that is wrong for the arm will track poorly however good it looks on paper. Moving magnet cartridges let you replace the stylus yourself and work with any phono stage. Moving coil cartridges usually resolve more detail and need a phono stage with enough gain and the right loading.
Record cleaning does more than most upgrades at the same price, because a good proportion of what people accept as normal surface noise is contamination rather than wear. Check tracking force with a gauge rather than trusting the dial, and check alignment with a protractor after any cartridge change.
