Connecting AV audio to a hi-fi system
Audio integration hardware solves the common problem of video and audio needing to go to different places. A television or matrix carries audio inside the HDMI signal, and a stereo amplifier, a pair of active speakers or a distributed audio system has no way to receive it.
A de-embedder extracts audio from the HDMI path and outputs it as analogue stereo, coaxial or optical without interrupting the video. An embedder does the reverse, inserting an analogue or digital audio source into an HDMI stream. Both have to handle the audio format involved: a unit that outputs stereo will not pass a multichannel bitstream, and one that cannot down mix will give you silence rather than a stereo fold down.
Check the format your source sends and the format your amplifier expects before choosing. Where a television is the source, eARC is often the simpler route and avoids extra hardware entirely.
