What a DAC changes and what it does not
A DAC converts digital audio into the analogue signal your amplifier can use, and in doing so it sets the noise floor and the timing accuracy of everything after it. Replacing the converter inside a streamer, television or computer with a dedicated unit is one of the more consistently audible upgrades in digital audio.
Decide the job before the price. A standalone DAC needs a separate source feeding it. A network DAC has streaming built in and replaces two boxes with one. A DAC with a headphone amplifier makes sense for a desktop system. A portable DAC solves phone and laptop listening rather than main system listening.
Inputs matter as much as sound quality. Count what you need to connect: USB from a computer, coaxial or optical from a television or transport, and check whether you need balanced XLR outputs for your amplifier. Sample rate support well beyond your actual library is not worth paying for. Tell us the sources you use and the amplifier you have and we will match a converter to them.
